Any to the point of the thread, I first heard that phrase in an episode of Friends...it wound me up then and it does a bit now.
Not only is it factually incorrect in terms of the Yanks saving our language, but also linguistically incorrect as we all, the Yanks, Us and the Krauts speak a variant of the same root language anyway...

I find it ironic when Americans use that phrase...considering that their whole post-war economic masterplan was largely based on the ideas and principals of the Third Reich (omitting some of the more obviously barbaric elements) but without the kitsch uniforms - they have achieved mostly the same goal by insiduous mental conditioning via phychiatric methods...

The Germans had done their bolt by the time the us came into it and if there hadn't been an invasion from the west the soviets would have swallowed up all of Europe and as a result end up winning the cold war economically and militarily. The us by entering the war saved itself from speaking Russian.

Apart from lend and lease they were out of 'our' war they only enetered because of Pearl Harbour and Germany declared war on them. Something like 90% of US citizens voted not to get involved in WW2, so it can hardly be said that they volunteered to help us they were 'forced' to by circumstances.
